What is complementary health insurance? SGK, cover and policy checklist

How does complementary health insurance work?

Complementary health insurance (TSS) is a private health insurance option linked to SGK public cover. Its general model addresses eligible difference charges for SGK-covered services at contracted private healthcare providers, subject to the policy. It does not mean every medical expense or difference charge at every hospital will be paid. TSB General Health Insurance Conditions make the insurer’s obligations subject to general and special terms and the amounts stated in the policy.

Who is it for? Check SGK eligibility

Your entitlement to SGK healthcare matters when considering TSS. Check active eligibility and authorization through SGK. Entitlement conditions may vary with insurance status; this guide does not impose a single contribution-day or eligibility rule for everyone. Ask separately about the insurer’s age, application and health-assessment requirements. Having an SGK registration does not guarantee that an application will be accepted.

Which hospitals can you use?

Check whether your intended hospital is contracted with both SGK and the relevant TSS network of your chosen insurer. An SGK agreement alone may not suffice. Before booking, ask the insurer and provider about conditions for the doctor, specialty, procedure and policy network, and confirm the current authorization process. One insurer’s provider list cannot stand in for another’s.

Inpatient and outpatient benefits are different

Review inpatient and outpatient benefits separately in your quote. Ask in writing which terms, limits and any usage allowances apply to consultations, tests or hospital treatment. Do not assume every TSS policy offers the same outpatient entitlement, limits or provider network. This guide promises no number of consultations, monetary limit or free service.

Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions

Check whether the policy includes waiting periods, which situations they apply to and when they start. Pre-existing conditions, exclusions, deductibles and optional benefits are addressed through the insurer’s assessment and special policy terms. Do not assume maternity or particular treatments are automatically included. Provide accurate health declarations and ask your adviser which secure channel to use for necessary medical documents.

How does it differ from private health insurance?

TSS relates to SGK-covered services and eligible difference charges. Private health insurance must be reviewed through its own contract, provider network and special terms. Product names alone cannot establish which option is broader or more suitable. Compare your SGK status, preferred hospitals and healthcare needs using the same checklist, and verify actual coverage in the relevant quote documents.

Checklist before a quote or renewal

Before a quote, review SGK eligibility, contracted hospitals, inpatient and outpatient terms, limits, exclusions, waiting periods, premium and payment terms and renewal provisions together. At renewal, do not assume unchanged terms; compare the new documents and ask in writing about any renewal-guarantee conditions. Türkiye Sigorta special terms are cited only as an example of how product conditions can be specified, not as a claim that Artı Sigorta partners with that insurer or offers those terms. You can share your needs with Artı Sigorta to review options; submitting a form does not issue a policy or start cover.
