Read your policy before you decide

A practical guide to reviewing cover, exclusions, deductibles and the claims process when comparing policies.

INSURANCE GUIDE
Read your policy before you decide

A policy name is not enough

An insurance contract sets out the insurer’s obligations if an agreed insured risk occurs. The insurance provisions of the Turkish Commercial Code provide the legal framework; review your policy’s general conditions, special terms and any supplementary documents together. Do not assume two quotes with the same product name provide identical cover. First identify the person, asset or liability you want to insure.

Start with details and dates

Check the details of the insured, the policyholder and the insured asset or activity. Review the start and end dates and any territorial scope stated in the policy. At renewal, compare the old and new documents rather than assuming previous terms continue unchanged. Discuss missing or incorrect information with your adviser before the policy is issued.

What are limits, exclusions and deductibles?

A limit is the payment ceiling stated for the relevant cover. An exclusion identifies circumstances outside cover. A deductible or excess can describe the part retained by the insured or a threshold for payment, as defined in the contract. The application varies by product and wording. Ask whether your quote has per-event limits, aggregate limits or sublimits, and how any deductible works. This article recommends no amounts or percentages.

Compare quotes against the same needs

Instead of comparing premiums alone, check how each quote addresses the same need. Note cover, exclusions, deductibles, the insurance period and payment terms separately. Ask for a written explanation of unclear wording. A lower price does not establish equivalent terms, and a higher price does not mean every risk is covered.

Understand the claims process in advance

Use your policy to identify who receives a claim, which channel to use and which documents are requested. Consult the contract and relevant general conditions for notification timing and required steps; do not assume a single deadline applies to every product. Keep your policy number and insurer contact details accessible. If an event occurs, obtain current instructions from the insurer. This checklist alone cannot establish that a claim will be paid.

How to prepare for an advice session

Prepare for a discussion with your current policy, priorities and unanswered questions. Artı Sigorta provides advice on identifying personal and business risks and reviewing options alongside policy terms. You can leave an enquiry on the contact page; do not send sensitive documents with an initial request. Submitting the form does not issue a policy or start cover. Actual cover depends on the insurer’s assessment and the issued contract.
