October: awareness month
October is recognised worldwide as a month to raise awareness of breast cancer and the value of early diagnosis. But breast health is not limited to one month: knowing the signs and keeping up with screening matter all year.
Healthy lifestyle habits
Regular physical activity, a healthy weight, a balanced diet, not smoking and avoiding alcohol support your overall health. The World Health Organization also lists an active life, weight control and limiting alcohol among steps that reduce risk. These habits help, but they do not replace screening.
Regular screening: free mammography in Türkiye
Under the Ministry of Health national programme, women aged 40–69 are screened with mammography every two years. This screening is free at KETEMs (Cancer Early Diagnosis, Screening and Training Centres). Ask your family doctor or a KETEM about appointments and your nearest centre. If you notice a new change, do not wait for your screening date.
Know your breasts
Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel makes it easier to notice a change early. Self-checking is a useful awareness habit, but on its own it does not replace mammography or a doctor’s examination.
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if you notice a new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm, a change in size or shape, skin dimpling or redness, nipple changes or discharge. These signs do not always mean cancer, and a painless lump should still be checked. Remember that breast cancer can also affect men.
Family history
If breast cancer runs in your family, be sure to tell your doctor. Depending on your personal risk, you may need to start screening earlier or have different tests; your doctor will decide. Having no family history does not mean there is no risk.
Your health and your insurance
This article is for general information and is not medical advice. Whether your private or complementary health insurance covers screening and tests depends on your policy terms. Ask Artı Sigorta to learn what your current policy covers.
